I wrote this story shortly after meeting my parents’ new budgie, and I hardly dare to contemplate what that says about me. (The picture’s not him, by the way, just a random internet budgie.)

A selfish poet
“Ave, Imperator, morituri te salutant”: In my case, from old age. But having had to be polite to “Joey , Joey, Joey” (my new ma-in-law’s budgie) – in the early 60s I was taken both back & aback by the fellow feeling which resonated with “four & twenty **** ***** baked in a pie”… No offence intended to the asteriskist (or the fourist) community.
